Whether you use these cinnamon Pan-Fried Apples to boost the flavor of your oatmeal or save them for dessert, these are sure to become a fall favorite!

I love apples! I especially love the smell of apples as they fry in butter and cinnamon. If you want your house to smell like the fall, just make some pan-fried apples.

These apples are pretty versatile considering they can be added to breakfast or eaten for dessert!

As you may know, I struggle getting my kids to eat a healthy breakfast. Of course they would rather have sweet breads or muffins every day (who wouldn’t?), but every so often, I have to sneak in something more nutritious! Adding fruit topping to oatmeal is a good way to trick my kids into eating well.

When my kids ask, “What’s for breakfast”, and the answer is “Oatmeal”, they look like I’ve just said “Lima Beans”.

But when the answer is “Apple Oatmeal”, we can all agree that this is a good way to start the day. Enough flavor to satisfy my little ones and enough fruit and fiber to satisfy my mom standards.

Pan-Fried Apples Ingredients

Apples: Any baking apple would work. I love Cosmic Crisp apples, but have also had great success making these pan-friend apples with Granny Smith.

Butter: unsalted or salted. Because butter is used here for its flavor, I do not recommend substituting with anything else.

Sugar: brown sugar. Press it tightly into the Tablespoon to measure. For sweeter apples, you can use the lesser amount of sugar, but for tart apples like Granny Smith, you’ll need more.

Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon seems like an apple’s best friend. They just belong together!

Nutmeg: Ground nutmeg is optional here. I love a smidge of nutmeg if I’m making a dessert like an apple crisp. I omit this bold flavor if I’m adding my apples to oatmeal.

How to Make Pan-Fried Apples

Peel and cube apples. Size is up to you. Smaller pieces will cook faster. Click here to find out the Best Way to Dice Apples Using Simple Kitchen Tools.

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan or skillet. Toss in your apples, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg (if using). Give it a good stir.

Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until your apples are soft, about 10 minutes.

That’s it! How simple is that?!

How to Serve Pan-Fried Apples

  • In cinnamon-brown sugar oatmeal
  • Straight from the pan: Top with whipped cream or ice cream for a treat!
  • As an apple crisp: Mix up equal parts butter, flour, oats, brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon. Place the apples in a ramekin and crumble the topping over them. Microwave or bake in the oven until warm.
