Frozen bananas covered with Chocolate

With the temperatures rising, I just want to relax with a cool snack. These frozen bananas are a great alternative to ice cream. With 1 serving of fruit in each treat, there’s no denying this is a healthy choice!

When you add the chocolate Magic Shell drizzle, you boost this healthy snack to a level of a sweet indulgence!

This is one of my favorite summertime snacks for the kids. It’s easy to make (especially since we always have bananas in this house)! You can whip up the Magic Shell and keep it in the pantry for weeks!

When my kids eat these frozen bananas, I feel good about given them fruit for a snack, and they feel like they’re eating a special dessert. It’s a win!

Magic Shell Ingredients

Chocolate Chips: For authentic “Magic Shell” flavor, opt for milk chocolate. In a pinch, you can use semi-sweet if that’s all you have, but it won’t be quite the same.

Vegetable Oil: Swap out for any neutral oil that’s shelf-stable and liquid at room temperature. You want this chocolate coating to be thin enough to pour right out of the pantry.

If you choose to swap out the vegetable oil for a solid fat (like crisco or coconut oil), you’ll have to reheat it each time you use it.

That’s it! So easy!

A Note About Bananas

You’ll want to use bananas that are ripe and sweet, but not so ripe that they’re squishy. You’ll want them to be a little firm so they hold their shape while you insert the stick.

How to Make Frozen Bananas in Homemade Magic Shell

Start by selecting bananas that are sweetly ripe, but still somewhat firm.

Cut an unpeeled banana into 2 pieces, a top half and a bottom half.

Take a craft stick (large or small, either is fine) and insert it into each banana half, being careful not to pierce through the top.

Peel the banana and place it on a plate. Store in the freezer until firm, about 4 hours.

Prepare Homemade Magic Shell by melting chocolate chips and stirring in vegetable oil.

Once bananas are firm, place Homemade Magic Shell in a baggie or piping bag with a corner cut off. Drizzle thick lines of chocolate over the frozen bananas.

Return to the freezer for about a minute to let the chocolate firm up.

Flip and repeat if you want to cover both sides.

Storing Frozen Bananas

Once the chocolate is set, you can store in a plastic baggie or covered container or serve right away!

Storing Extra Homemade Magic Shell

Store tightly covered at room temperature up to a month. I like to keep mine in a glass jar. If you’ve used a liquid oil to make the Magic Shell, it will still be liquid at room temperature, so it’s ready to pour.

If your magic shell becomes too solidified to pour, simply heat in a microwave for a few seconds until warm.

Happy Snacking!

Equipment

  • 4 craft sticks (popsicle sticks) (large or small)

Ingredients

  • 2 bananas, ripe but still firm
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Cut unpeeled bananas in half, creating 2 "tops" and 2 "bottoms".
  • Insert a craft stick into the cut end of each banana piece, being careful not to poke through the top.
  • Peel bananas.
  • Place flat on a plate or dish. Freeze for 4 hours or until firm.
  • Make Homemade Magic Shell: In a small microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate chips in microwave in 30 second intervals until they begin to melt. Microwave in 10 second intervals until completely melted. Stir in oil until completely smooth.
  • When bananas are completely frozen, place Homemade Magic Shell in a baggie or piping bag. Drizzle over frozen bananas until covered to your liking.
  • Return to freezer for an additional minute to allow chocolate coating to harden. If desired, flip bananas and drizzle other side.
  • Once chocolate is hardened, store bananas tightly covered in the freezer until ready to eat!

Notes

  • For authentic “Magic Shell” flavor, use milk chocolate chips. In a pinch, semi-sweet or dark can be substituted, but the flavor will be different.
  • Vegetable oil can be replaced with any other neutral-flavored oil. If a solid fat (like crisco or coconut oil) is used, you’ll have to reheat the Magic Shell each time you want to use it.
  • Store leftover Homemade Magic Shell in a glass jar at room temperature up to a month.
  • If your magic shell becomes too solidified to pour, simply heat in a microwave for a few seconds until warm.
