Equipment

  • electric mixer (optional)

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter, melted (1 stick)
  • cup cocoa powder (53 grams)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (360 grams)
  • cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • black icing coloring

Instructions

  • Mix melted butter and cocoa powder.
  • Stir in vanilla. Alternate adding a portion of powdered sugar and a portion of milk until all is added.
  • Beat on medium high for 1-2 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • Add a small amount of black icing coloring and stir until completely incorporated. Continue adding a bit at a time until desired color is achieved.

Notes

  • Powdered sugar is also called confectioner's sugar.
  • This frosting can be made with a wooden spoon and a bowl, but will be lighter and fluffier if beaten with an electric mixer at the end.
