With 5 kids in the family, I’ve made plenty of birthday cakes over the years. Here are the ones I made in 2024!
Unicorn Birthday Cake for my 3-Year-Old Girl

L wanted a Unicorn Birthday Cake, which ended up being fairly simple to make.
I started with a 2-tier round cake, frosted in white with store-bought ears made out of sugar. The package came with a horn, but it was broken.
Luckily, I had ice cream cones that could be made into a horn with the addition of frosting and sprinkles. It was messy, but cute.
Throw on some pastel-colored swirls for the mane and you’ve got a pretty good-looking unicorn!

Are those toothpicks supporting the horn and ears? You bet!
Spiderman Birthday Cake for my 6-Year-Old Boy
J wanted a Spiderman Birthday Cake made only of chocolate. Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting. He specifically asked for no white or colored frosting.
That request actually made this cake easy to make! Arranging chocolate candies on a cake goes much quicker than frosting!

At first, my plan was to use M&Ms to make a full-on Spiderman face. But when I arranged the candies on a plate as a test, it looked too chaotic.
I switched the design to be the iconic eyes only. I used regular-sized red M&Ms for an outline of the face and eyes. Then I used blue Mini-M&Ms to fill in the eyes.
Did I spend forever picking out only blue and red M&M’s? Yes. A sacrifice of motherhood no one ever expects.
Minion Birthday Cake for my 8-Year-Old Boy
F asked for a Minion Birthday Cake made from chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Since he doesn’t mind buttercream frosting, I layered colored frostings on top of the chocolate frosting.

I designed this Minion cake to resemble Bob from the Minions movie. (Hence the different colored eyes.)
Since I have a teddy bear pan from when the girls were little, I also made Tim, Bob’s cute little teddy bear! He’s not perfect, but he’s a fun addition.

I made 3 teddy bear cakes so I could choose the one that came out the best to pair with the cake. I used the rest of the yellow cake batter to make cupcakes to freeze for the next birthday (which is only 4 days away from F’s).

Dog Cupcakes for my 10-Year-Old Girl

Since K’s birthday fell on a weeknight, we needed a simple small dessert. We saved her full birthday party and cake for the weekend.
For her actual birthday, I used the frozen cupcakes from F’s party and decorated them like doggies.

Heart-Puppy Birthday Cake for my 10-Year-Old Girl
For K’s party, she asked for the puppy that she always draws on the back of her homemade birthday cards. She requested a butterscotch cake with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Frosting (recipe coming soon!).

This cake was made using a square cake and a round cake (cut in half) and arranged as shown below. I also added a few cupcakes for the ears.

Pipe on a simple face and you’ve got yourself a pretty cute little puppy!
Bluey Birthday Cake for my 12-Year-Old Girl
As a last hurrah of childhood, my oldest daughter requested a Bluey Birthday Cake.

This cake started out with a 9″ x 13″ rectangle cake, and I added a couple of cupcakes to have the ears stick out on top. With a family as big as ours, I’d rather add cake to the top than cut cake off to make the shape of the ears.
Watch for my Bluey Cake Tutorial, coming soon! This technique is good for any “drawn-on” cake design.
